Sound Baths in Asheville

A sound bath is a meditation and relaxation experience using gongs, singing bowls, and other sound healing instruments played live while you rest and release. Sound baths have quickly become one of the most popular and easiest ways to unwind and de-stress in Asheville. People seek out sound baths because they ease tension, quiet a busy mind, improve sleep, and give a deep, profound rest.

What to Expect

Timothy's sessions last about 90 minutes and start with a brief welcome, soothing yoga movements, and breathing exercises. The 60-minute sound bath ends with a short closing meditation.

  1. Welcome & Orientation

A quick overview of the experience so you know what to expect, including an orientation of the space and tips for the best experience.

  2. Settle In

Timothy starts with 15-20 minutes of yoga and somatic movement to let go of the tension and worries of the day and downregulate the nervous system. Pranayama breathwork and mudras are used to focus the mind and activate the intentions of the practice.

  3. Sound Immersion

For the next 60 minutes, everyone lies down to receive the soothing sounds of gongs, singing bowls, tongue drums, chimes, and other healing instruments. While every sound bath is a unique improvised experience, Timothy consciously creates a specific sequence and choice of instruments to align with the healing intention of the session. Timothy layers both similar and contrasting sounds and walks around the room to provide you with an intimate experience of these healing vibrations. Moving the sound around the room produces greater relaxation and stress reduction than a fixed, static sound source.

  4. Closing Meditation

The session ends softly and transitions into a guided seated meditation to seal in the potency of the practice. There is ample time for you to transition out of a deep rest and to ask questions.

The Instruments Timothy Uses

Every sound bath draws on a unique mix of gongs, bowls, chimes, and Eastern healing instruments. Timothy is always adding to his extensive collection to make his sound experiences powerful and extraordinary.

Singing Bowls

Crystal singing bowls are cast from pure quartz. Tibetan singing bowls are hand-hammered from a blend of metals. Both are played by striking or rubbing with a mallet to produce a sustained, overtone-rich sound. These sustained tones increase alpha and theta brainwave activity, improve heart rate variability, and ease anxiety.

Gongs

A Tam gong is a large bronze disc that produces a very deep, low-frequency wash. A wind gong creates a wide, shimmery wash with a long sustain. These low-frequency vibrations are grounding, and they downregulate the nervous system and lower stress. Thai nipple gongs are individually tuned, bright and bell-like, used as harmonic accents or as a melodic element.

Chimes & Bells

Koshi chimes are small, tuned wind chimes with a soft, airy tone. Hand bells and Tibetan bells create a clear and bright ring. They add texture and depth, but also gently re-orient attention back to the soundscape to prevent one from falling completely asleep.

Drums: Frame, Steel Tongue & Thunder

A frame drum is a large, flat handheld drum that creates a deep, open, earthy sound. Its hypnotic rhythmic pulses create brainwave entrainment and activate alpha brainwaves. Steel tongue drums are melodic percussion instruments that ring out resonant, bell-like tones. A thunder drum uses an internal coiled spring to produce a deep, rolling rumble.

Rain Sticks & Percussion

A rain stick is a tube filled with small beads or seeds that produce a steady, rain-like sound with a pink noise frequency profile. Seed pod shakers add a similar dry, rattling texture. Both create an auditory blanket that blocks out distracting noises and stops racing thoughts. These natural sounds shift the body out of a stress response and help the nervous system settle into a deep rest.

Chakra Tubes & Flow Chimes

Chakra tubes are a set of metal tubes, each tuned to a note to activate a different chakra energy center. These create rhythmic "wah-wah" pulses, generating shifting monaural wave patterns. Flow chimes are tuned hollow metal tubes with a bright, resonant ring. Twirling them and walking around the room creates a three-dimensional dome of sound that blocks out distractions in the room.

Benefits of a Sound Bath

A sound bath benefits you on a physical, mental, and energetic level by using acoustic resonance to actively restructure your nervous system.

Physically, the slow-paced, layered frequencies and moving soundscapes stimulate the vagus nerve, boosting vagal tone. This shifts the body out of chronic, sympathetic stress patterns and activates the parasympathetic "rest-and-digest" healing mode. As a result, heart rate variability improves, cortisol levels drop, tense muscles relax, and you experience deep rest.

Mentally, a continuous, unpredictable movement of the instruments disrupts the brain's predictive patterns and modulates and inhibits activity in the Default Mode Network (DMN)—the brain network responsible for anxiety and mental rumination. Through brainwave entrainment, your mental state shifts away from active beta waves into the calm focus of alpha waves, eventually dropping into the deep theta state. This slower brainwave pattern promotes deep meditation, somatic grounding, and emotional release.

Energetically, the acoustic vibrations function similarly to acupuncture or Reiki. The physical sound waves create a three-dimensional acoustic enclosure, passing through the body's water and tissues to break up stagnant tension, release cellular blockages, and restore balance to the body's subtle energy centers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a sound bath?

A sound bath is a guided listening experience where gongs, singing bowls, and other instruments are played live while you lie back, let go, and relax. There's no water—you're submerged in sound instead. Most people prefer to spend the session lying on a mat with their eyes closed.

Do I need any yoga or meditation experience?

No experience is needed. Sound baths are open to complete beginners, and there's nothing to learn beforehand. All you have to do is lie down, get comfortable, and close your eyes.

Can I fall asleep during the sound bath?

Yes, and it happens often. You might wake up to the last few tones and not remember drifting off. Whether you're awake or asleep, the sound still moves through the room, and through you.

Is it normal to feel emotional during a sound bath?

Yes, sound baths can surface unexpected emotions. Tears, grief, anxiety, or even a wave of euphoria can be experienced. An emotional release does not mean something is wrong. If a feeling comes up, you're encouraged to be present with it and let it release any deeply held emotional tension.

What if I need to move or can't lie still the whole time?

You can shift position, sit up, or stretch whenever you need to. You can step out of the room if you need to take care of yourself.

How long does a session last?

A typical sound bath runs about 75 to 90 minutes. About 60 of that is spent in the sound immersion itself. The rest is the opening movement, breathwork, and closing meditation.

Is a sound bath safe during pregnancy or with a pacemaker?

If you're pregnant, have a pacemaker or other medical implant, or have a history of seizures, please check with your doctor before attending. Timothy is not able to advise on medical conditions, so when in doubt, ask your physician.
